Tallahassee band the Yeah Babys brought their genre-bending sound to the Suwannee Hulaween music festival at the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak on October 23, marking their first appearance at a major regional music festival.

Blending elements of rap, funk, jazz, rock and jam music, the five-member group got its start playing house parties and small shows in Tallahassee. All five members have ties to Florida State University, including three recent graduates and two current students. What began as a casual project among friends has grown into a more serious musical pursuit.

The band credits Tallahassee's close-knit music community for helping it develop its sound and build an audience. From its first performance at an FSU Skate Club event to the stages of Hulaween, the group says support from friends, fellow musicians and fans has been essential to its growth.

WFSU's Tristan Wood caught up with the Yeah Babies at their Hulaween campsite to discuss their unconventional sound, their roots in Tallahassee's local music scene and what performing at a major festival means for their future.
